Overview

Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, sits in a high valley at around 1,790 metres, encircled by the peaks of the Hindu Kush. No airline flies non-stop between the UK and Kabul. The most dependable routings connect through Dubai: fly London Heathrow or Gatwick, or Manchester, to Dubai with Emirates, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic in about seven hours, then continue to Kabul with flydubai, Kam Air or Ariana Afghan Airlines on a leg of roughly two and a half to three hours. Kabul's airport lies about 5 km north-east of the city centre, a drive of 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and security checkpoints. There is no rail link and no formal airport bus. Taxis wait beyond the terminal perimeter, but most visitors arrange a pick-up in advance through their hotel, employer or host, which is the safest and simplest option.
