About flights to Oman
Overview
Oman sits on the south-eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, a calm and welcoming alternative to its flashier Gulf neighbours. Think dramatic mountains, wadis with turquoise pools, empty golden dunes and a long Indian Ocean coastline, all wrapped around the easy-going capital, Muscat. For UK travellers it has become a firm winter-sun favourite, and searches for cheap flights to Oman climb sharply from autumn onwards. This page brings together live fares and route options in one place.
Best time to fly to Oman
The most comfortable months are October to March, when Muscat sees warm days of around 25-30C and cooler evenings ideal for sightseeing and hiking. April and late September are shoulder periods with rising heat but generally lower fares. Midsummer (June to August) is very hot inland, often above 40C, though the far south around Salalah is transformed by the khareef monsoon into a green, misty landscape that draws visitors from across the region. Use the When to book chart above to see how prices move through the year.
Main gateway cities & airports
Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the principal gateway and where the vast majority of UK travellers arrive; it is modern, straightforward and about 15-20 minutes from the Muttrah waterfront. Salalah Airport (SLL) in the southern Dhofar region is the second option, usually reached on a short domestic hop from Muscat, and is handy if the khareef or the frankincense coast is your focus.
Airlines and routes
Oman Air, the national carrier, operates daily direct flights from London Heathrow to Muscat, with a typical flight time of around 7 hours 30 minutes eastbound. British Airways also serves the Heathrow-Muscat route. From Manchester and other UK airports there are no direct services at present, so most travellers connect through a Gulf or European hub: Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul or Gulf Air via Bahrain. Allowing for the stop, connecting journeys from Manchester usually take around 9 to 12 hours. Compare direct and one-stop options in the price charts on this page.
Popular places to visit in Oman
- Muscat: the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the bustling Muttrah Souq and the striking Royal Opera House.
- Nizwa: a historic fort, lively Friday livestock market and the gateway to the Jebel Akhdar highlands.
- Wahiba Sands: classic Arabian dunes for dune drives, camel rides and a night under the stars in a desert camp.
- Wadi Shab: a scenic canyon walk leading to emerald pools and a hidden waterfall cave.
- Salalah: the lush south, with frankincense heritage, blowholes and beaches, at its greenest during the khareef.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Oman
- Book two to four months ahead for winter travel, when demand from UK holidaymakers is highest.
- Check the price charts on this page for the cheapest departure days; midweek flights are often better value than weekends.
- Compare a direct Oman Air or British Airways flight against a one-stop fare via Doha or Dubai, which can be noticeably cheaper.
- Consider flying in the shoulder months of April or September, or routing into Salalah, for lower fares.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders can currently enter Oman without a visa for tourist stays of up to 14 days, provided you have a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed return ticket, hotel booking and travel insurance; for longer visits a 30-day e-visa is available online from the Royal Oman Police before you travel. The currency is the Omani Rial (OMR), divided into 1000 baisa and one of the world's highest-valued currencies; card payments are widely accepted and ATMs are easy to find. For the best fares, keep an eye on the When to book chart above and set your dates as early as you reasonably can.
Baggage & hand-luggage allowance for flights to Oman
Your allowance to Oman depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
Packing & baggage tips
- Full-service carriers (e.g. British Airways, Turkish Airlines, KLM) usually include a checked bag on long-haul economy fares; basic/low-cost fares often don't.
- Cabin (hand) bag size is commonly around 56 × 45 × 25 cm — confirm your airline's limit before you pack.
- Liquids in hand luggage must be in containers of 100 ml or less, inside one clear resealable bag.
- Weigh your bags at home — airport excess-baggage fees are far higher than pre-booked allowances.
- Extra or heavier bags are almost always cheaper added online in advance than at the airport.
