About flights to Yemen
Overview
Yemen occupies the south-western corner of the Arabian Peninsula, a land of mudbrick tower cities, incense-trade history and the extraordinary island of Socotra. It is also a country that has been affected by conflict since 2014, and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all travel to Yemen. In practice, most flights to Yemen booked from the UK are for members of the Yemeni community visiting family, humanitarian and business travellers, or well-prepared visitors heading to Socotra. Our team can talk you through the routes that are actually operating before you commit.
Best time to fly to Yemen
Yemen has several climates. The highlands around Sana'a sit above 2,000m and stay mild all year with cold nights, while the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden coasts (Aden, Hodeidah) are hot and very humid, at their most punishing from May to September. November to February is the most comfortable window for the mainland. Socotra is best from October to May; the south-west monsoon between June and September brings fierce winds and rough seas, and flights and boat trips pause. Demand on connecting flights through Cairo, Amman and the Gulf rises sharply around Ramadan, Eid and the Hajj season, so check the When to book chart above.
Main gateway cities & airports
- Aden International (ADE): the principal working gateway in the south.
- Seiyun (GXF): serves the Hadhramaut valley and towns such as Shibam and Tarim.
- Sana'a International (SAH): operations are limited and subject to change.
- Socotra (SCT): mostly seasonal charter flights, often routed via Abu Dhabi or Cairo.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights from the UK to Yemen. Yemenia (Yemen Airways) is the national carrier and links Aden and Seiyun with Cairo, Amman, Jeddah, Riyadh and Djibouti. From the UK you would normally fly with a carrier such as EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian, Saudia or a Gulf airline to the connecting hub, then continue on Yemenia. As a guide, London to Cairo is around 5 hours and London to Amman about 5 hours 30 minutes (roughly 30 to 60 minutes longer from Manchester), followed by a 2 to 3 hour sector into Yemen plus connection time, so allow a full day door to door.
Popular places to visit in Yemen
- Old City of Sana'a: a UNESCO-listed maze of decorated tower houses trimmed with white gypsum tracery.
- Shibam: 16th-century mudbrick high-rises in Wadi Hadhramaut, known as the "Manhattan of the Desert".
- Socotra Island: dragon's blood trees, bottle trees and empty white beaches found nowhere else on earth.
- Aden: a volcanic crater city wrapped around a historic harbour, with colonial-era landmarks.
- Zabid: a whitewashed former centre of Islamic learning on the Tihama plain.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Yemen
- Compare hub routings side by side; fares via Cairo, Amman, Jeddah and Djibouti can differ significantly, so use the price charts on this page.
- Avoid Ramadan, Eid and the Hajj season, when diaspora demand peaks; the When to book chart above shows the quieter weeks.
- Book the connecting sectors on a single ticket where possible so you are protected if a Yemenia schedule shifts.
- Midweek departures from the UK are usually cheaper than weekend ones.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need a visa arranged before travel; there is no tourist visa on arrival, mainland trips generally require a local sponsor, and Socotra is normally visited on an organised programme with permits handled for you. The currency is the Yemeni rial (YER), and you should carry US dollars in cash as card payments and ATMs are unreliable. Remember that the FCDO advises against all travel to Yemen, so read gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice before booking, as travel insurance and consular assistance are very limited. For timing, book early and keep an eye on the price charts on this page.
Baggage & hand-luggage allowance for flights to Yemen
Your allowance to Yemen depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
Packing & baggage tips
- Full-service carriers (e.g. British Airways, Turkish Airlines, KLM) usually include a checked bag on long-haul economy fares; basic/low-cost fares often don't.
- Cabin (hand) bag size is commonly around 56 × 45 × 25 cm — confirm your airline's limit before you pack.
- Liquids in hand luggage must be in containers of 100 ml or less, inside one clear resealable bag.
- Weigh your bags at home — airport excess-baggage fees are far higher than pre-booked allowances.
- Extra or heavier bags are almost always cheaper added online in advance than at the airport.
