Cheap Flights to Moscow (DME)

Overview

Moscow is Russia's vast, energetic capital — golden domes, Soviet-era grandeur and arguably the world's most beautiful metro. Before booking, UK travellers should know that the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently advises against all travel to Russia, which also makes travel insurance very hard to arrange. There are also no direct UK–Russia flights, so every trip now involves at least one connection. The guidance below covers routes, timing and what to expect on arrival.

Best time to fly to Moscow

Moscow has a continental climate. Summers (June to August) are mild to warm at around 20–25°C, with long days and lively parks — this is peak season. May and September are cooler, quieter and generally cheaper. Winters run long and genuinely cold, usually below freezing from November to March with dependable snow: atmospheric, but only for the well-prepared. Airlines and routes

Since 2022 there are no direct UK–Moscow flights, and UK and Russian carriers no longer serve each other's countries. Travellers now reach Moscow on one-stop itineraries through a third country: commonly Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Emirates or flydubai via Dubai, Air Serbia via Belgrade, or connections through Yerevan or Baku. Expect a total journey of roughly 9–13 hours from London depending on the layover; from Manchester you will usually add a feeder flight first. Moscow's main airports are Sheremetyevo (SVO) and Domodedovo (DME).

Things to do in Moscow

Most of Moscow's highlights sit in the centre or a short metro ride apart.

• Red Square and the Kremlin: the historic heart of Russia, framed by the fortress walls, Lenin's Mausoleum and the State Historical Museum.
• St Basil's Cathedral: the swirl of multicoloured onion domes that has become the city's emblem.
• The Moscow Metro: Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya and Novoslobodskaya are mosaic-and-chandelier "underground palaces".
• Tretyakov Gallery: the definitive collection of Russian painting and icons, from medieval works onwards.
• Bolshoi Theatre: one of the world's great opera and ballet houses, worth visiting even for a tour.

At Domodedovo (DME)

Domodedovo lies about 42 km south of central Moscow. The fastest route in is the Aeroexpress train to Paveletsky station, roughly 45–50 minutes and free of road traffic, with a metro interchange at the far end. Official airport taxis booked at the desk or app take 45 minutes to well over an hour depending on traffic, and regional buses to the nearest metro stations are cheaper but slower.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Moscow

• Book ahead: one-stop capacity is limited, so fares climb as seats sell — around two to four months out tends to be the sweet spot. Check the price charts on this page for the trend.
• Fly midweek and off-peak: Tuesday and Wednesday departures, and travel outside July, August and the festive period, are usually cheaper.
• Search flexible dates: shifting your trip a day or two either way often trims the fare on connecting routes.
• Compare hubs: price the Istanbul, Dubai and Belgrade routings side by side, as the cheapest connection changes week to week.

Travel essentials

UK passport holders need a visa to enter Russia, arranged in advance through the Russian visa application centre; processing is slower and more restricted than it once was, so allow plenty of time. The currency is the Russian rouble (RUB), and this is critical: Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside Russia no longer work there, so you cannot pay by UK card or use ATMs — take enough currency for the whole trip and exchange it locally. Carry a passport with at least six months' validity and read the FCDO's Russia advice before you commit.
