Best time to fly to Rome

Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the sweet spot: warm, bright days and manageable crowds. July and August are hot, often above 30°C, and busy at the major sites. Airlines and routes

Rome is well connected to the UK. British Airways and ITA Airways fly from London Heathrow, easyJet from Gatwick, Luton, Bristol and Manchester, while Ryanair, Wizz Air and Jet2.com serve airports including Stansted, Leeds Bradford, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Most flights use Fiumicino (FCO); some budget services use Ciampino (CIA). London to Rome takes about 2 hours 30 minutes non-stop; from Manchester allow roughly 2 hours 45 minutes. Connecting flights via hubs such as Paris or Amsterdam exist but rarely beat flying direct for a city this close.

Things to do in Rome

You could spend a week here and barely scratch the surface, but first-time visitors usually build a trip around these:

• Colosseum: the vast first-century amphitheatre; a timed ticket also covers the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
• Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: miles of galleries ending at Michelangelo's ceiling, so go early or late to dodge the queues.

At Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

Fiumicino sits about 30km south-west of the centre. The quickest way in is the Leonardo Express, a non-stop train to Roma Termini taking around 32 minutes and running every 15 to 30 minutes. Regional FL1 trains serve other stations, airport buses reach Termini in under an hour, and licensed white taxis charge a set fixed fare into the historic centre. Ciampino is about 15km south-east, linked to Termini by shuttle bus.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Rome

• Book roughly two to three months ahead; last-minute fares to Rome are rarely kind.
• Fly midweek and avoid school holidays — Tuesday to Thursday departures are usually cheaper than weekends.
• Use a flexible date search and compare a day either side of your ideal trip.

Travel essentials

UK passport holders don't need a visa for trips to Italy of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and stay valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave. The EU's ETIAS visa-waiver is expected to be introduced, so check GOV.UK before you book. The currency is the euro; cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for smaller cafés and markets. Bring a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) alongside travel insurance.
