About flights to Poland
Overview
Poland offers a lot within a short hop from the UK: grand medieval squares, a moving wartime history, hearty food and some of Europe's best-value city breaks. Kraków and Warsaw draw the crowds, while Gdańsk on the Baltic, buzzy Wrocław and the mountain town of Zakopane reward extra time. Flight times run well under three hours, with plenty of low-cost and full-service carriers from across Britain.
Best time to fly to Poland
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September) are the sweet spot: mild days, long evenings and thinner crowds. July and August are warmest and liveliest, but also busiest and dearest, especially for weekend flights. Winter is cold and often snowy — good for Kraków's Christmas market or skiing in the Tatras. For how fares shift through the year, see the When to book chart above.
Main gateway cities & airports
The main arrival points for UK travellers are Warsaw Chopin (WAW) and Kraków John Paul II (KRK). Gdańsk (GDN), Wrocław (WRO), Katowice (KTW), Poznań (POZ) and Warsaw Modlin (WMI) also take direct UK flights. Modlin and Katowice are mainly low-cost bases, so check which airport your flight uses before booking transfers.
Airlines and routes
LOT Polish Airlines flies from London Heathrow and City, with onward connections across Poland. Ryanair and Wizz Air run the widest low-cost network, from Stansted, Luton, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and Leeds Bradford among others. easyJet serves Kraków and Gdańsk, British Airways flies London to Warsaw and Kraków, and Jet2 adds city-break routes from northern bases. Most flights are direct; connections via Warsaw, Frankfurt or Amsterdam help from smaller UK airports.
Popular places to visit in Poland
- Kraków: Poland's cultural heart, with a huge medieval square, Wawel Castle and the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial nearby.
- Warsaw: a faithfully rebuilt Old Town, world-class museums and a lively food and bar scene.
- Gdańsk: a beautifully restored Hanseatic port on the Baltic, close to Sopot's beaches.
- Wrocław: a colourful market square, island churches and hundreds of tiny bronze dwarves to spot.
- Zakopane & the Tatra Mountains: hiking in summer, skiing in winter and rustic highland cooking year-round.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Poland
- Fly midweek where possible — Tuesday and Wednesday departures usually undercut Friday and Sunday.
- Compare nearby airports at both ends; leaving from Stansted or arriving into Katowice rather than Kraków can lower the fare.
- Book two to four months ahead for summer, Christmas and Easter travel, when seats go quickly.
- Use the When to book chart above to time your booking rather than guessing.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need no visa for tourism — up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Your passport should have been issued within the last 10 years and stay valid for at least three months after you leave; an ETIAS travel authorisation is being phased in for visa-exempt visitors, so check the latest guidance before you fly. The currency is the Polish złoty (PLN), not the euro; cards are widely accepted, but keep some cash for markets and small cafés. To choose when to book, use the price charts on this page.
Baggage & hand-luggage allowance for flights to Poland
Your allowance to Poland depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
Packing & baggage tips
- Full-service carriers (e.g. British Airways, Turkish Airlines, KLM) usually include a checked bag on long-haul economy fares; basic/low-cost fares often don't.
- Cabin (hand) bag size is commonly around 56 × 45 × 25 cm — confirm your airline's limit before you pack.
- Liquids in hand luggage must be in containers of 100 ml or less, inside one clear resealable bag.
- Weigh your bags at home — airport excess-baggage fees are far higher than pre-booked allowances.
- Extra or heavier bags are almost always cheaper added online in advance than at the airport.
